Setting Up Browsers Previous | Next
Contents

Once WebDoubler has been installed and started on the server, Web browsers on the LAN must be configured to use it. The process is similar for most browsers, and specific instructions for a number of popular browsers are provided below.

In general, you will need to open the browser's Preferences window and select the "Proxies" tab or option to display proxy configuration information. Once the proxy configuration information has been opened, enter the domain name or IP address of the server where WebDoubler is running into the "Web" or "HTTP" proxy address field, along with the port number configured in WebDoubler (by default, 8000). WebDoubler also supports secure (SSL) tunnelling, so you can also set the address or domain name of the WebDoubler server as the "Secure HTTP" or "SSL" proxy as well. Secure transactions will occur on the same port number as standard HTTP, so use the same port number you used for standard connections.

Most browsers also have a control to enable or disable proxy use; frequently a checkbox or radio button. Be sure to select the "Enable" or "Manual Proxy Configuration" radio button, as appropriate. Finally, save your changes and close the window.

Once configured, all Web activity on the browser will be sent through WebDoubler. You can confirm this by opening the WebDoubler Activity Monitor and accessing a couple of pages to see that WebDoubler is actually processing the requests.

These general instructions should work for most modern browsers. As new browsers are released, check the WebDoubler page on Maxum's Web site for updated browser configuration instructions.
